Benjamin David Steele beat me to the punch on the open-mindedness trait.
Another semi-peripheral issue is when, rationally, do you give up on looking at contradictory information? It's dysfunctional to wonder if the sun will rise tomorrow. Contradictory evidence would have to stand out in some way to even be worth looking at, even for an open-minded person.
Has anyone addressed civics education that includes critical thinking skills? Some people learn to control dysfunctional thinking and behavior in therapy. There's anger management, so why not motivated reasoning management?
btw "motivated reasoning" is kinda oxymoronic -- I keep thinking it means "motivated to reason" when it means the opposite.
Thank you for writing this. I'm very glad to have read it!
