Great piece! There is to me an important nuance to Tolkien's concept of Good that Sam expresses.
It's in the extended release version of Two Towers in which toward the very end of the movie, Frodo, Sam and Gollum are lying / sitting exhausted in the ruined city of Osgiliath.
Sam, the true hero of LOTR ;) rises from his despair and says (maybe not in these exact words):
"There's good things in this world, Mr. Frodo, and they're worth fighting for."
As if to say, regardless of your personal goodness, you're called to defend the Good in the world, no matter what the sacrifice, and whatever the ultimate outcome, you are ennobled for it.
