Great reading, Steven! I totally agree that understanding oneself requires understanding how reason and emotion assert themselves. I think not understanding the relationship between reason and emotion is a major cause of so much dysfunction we see in people.

A lot of illuminating if not fascinating focus on the mechanics of reason and emotion in the brain can be found in: Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow; Damasio, The Feeling of What Happens; McGilchrist, The Master and His Emissary; deWaal, Our Inner Ape; LeDoux, The Deep History of Ourselves. I got a lot out of all these.
