How do you mean "evidently"? Isn't the jury still out on the question of "does the brain produce qualia?" even though many people answer "no"?
Human history is a tale of superstition, religion, mysticism, etc, being the default for what we cannot explain. In this tale, one by one, scientific knowledge replaces the default, with a few mysteries left standing.
Why are some people eager to believe science has gone as far as it can? To argue that science has reached its limit opens a back door for religion (panpsychism?) to re-enter the discussion.
Given the countless amazing things lifeless atoms can do, why do life and qualia seem like a bridge too far? Can we not live with a "TBD" explanation while science continues its work?
Just asking :)
