I guess it all depends on what you focus on. I can imagine someone from India finding a lot to like about America.
For a couple years, I had a German neighbor, a 30-ish woman with two young kids. She couldn't wait to get back to Germany. She missed the social services and the caring attitude behind them.
I'm disgusted by the pride many of my fellow Americans take in their crass, crude lifestyles. I envy the civilized lifestyles in Europe.
When I was in Europe, I didn't at all miss the giant stores and parking lots of America. Whatever their convenience, they reek of consumerism for its own sake. I can see how that wouldn't be salient to someone used to scarcity, like the author.
