In 1980, there was a campground a stone's throw from the Azay le Rideau chateau in the Loire Valley. After rainy grueling hitchhiking out of Tours, I made it to that campground and pitched my tent in the dark and fell promptly asleep. I became half-conscious of a booming voice and patriotic band music, not even remotely like anything I had heard before. I begged in my mind for it to stop. Because I was never awake enough, I could not decide whether it was a freakish reality or a nightmare. It went on for what felt like an hour. I figured out later it was a son et lumiere ("sound and light") show, no doubt a recording they played late at night, to entertain the few tourists at the venue, and to torture campers. Maybe there is no word in French for "curfew"? I enjoyed the travel story. One never forgets surreal experiences like that.
