Interesting! My partner seems to refuse to accept hearing there is no clear diagnosis, that there must be be a diagnosis, the doctors aren't looking hard enough. One of my best friends is a professor of medicine. We have been friends since college. He told me about his experience learning that often there is no clear diagnosis. But I can't seem to get that point across to my partner.
He also said about making a diagnosis "when you hear hoof beats, don't go looking for zebras."
Recently he's talked about being in team discussions about patients when there is no clear course forward, and someone proposes something and justifies it with "we've got to do something" and he points out there is no evidence that course works in cases like this. That seems to relate to your theme in this piece.
