It's kinda sad to read this, although so much of the world created by digital media is saddening. It seems like democracy is opposed to meritocracy, especially when the lure of profit runs rampant. At least the Marvel Universe hasn't taken over Medium. Maybe Medium is up against the limit of what can be constructively accomplished by counting claps, and should look for a second metric that will address the issue you describe?
