Thank you for sharing this interview! There are some especially fascinating insights (from both Dr. Poole and you).
Your discussion about evolution and nature prompted a thought: what if we really studied why nature gave our minds we have? What path did natural selection take to arrive at the human mind? Then we might know the proper balances for our contrary impulses like smart and stupid, experimental and cautious, loving and utilitarian, etc. Knowing the proper balance for our minds might help educate AIs as you and Eve discuss.
Your discussion about parenting AIs struck a chord. I read Erik Larson’s The Myth of Artificial Artificial Intelligence and thought: maybe the way to create artificial general intelligence (AGI) is to raise a “robot” as one would a human child. Then the “robot” would learn the crucial nuances—but then you would need really good teachers.
The idea of people and AIs learning to be good people—or not—is at the root of Link #1 below. I hope you will take a look at it. Benjamin Cain critiqued this article in the Responses comments, which prompted my Link #2, which prompted his Link #3. I would deeply appreciate your thoughts on the discussion, given the perspicacious clarity in your writing. Thank you very much!
