Thank you for stirring the pot, Douglas. Another thought is to shut down the electric grid worldwide -- all at the same time, with say 6 months notice. So much technology requires electricity. People can't easily put gas in their cars without electricity-driven gas stations. Airliners can't fly without radio. We wouldn't need to burn coal to produce electricity. World trade would hugely diminish.

With 6 months notice, people could put up solar panels, plant crops in their yards, etc. People is less developed regions already are much closer to self-sufficiency. Politics would become tribal, as they already are in some places.

Of course there'd be massive suffering and death, but perhaps less of it than we will inflict on ourselves if we do nothing.

The advantage of this approach is it requires a relatively small number of people to pull it off, mainly political authorities and power company executives and workers. We wouldn't need to get everyone in the world to become nice people.

Just throwing out an idea here, simply because we need to discover more options for ourselves, and every bit of brainstorming helps, if only to help discover more options.
