Thank you for those lines from T.S. Eliot. I agree, there are hardly any words written in Engish in the last century that do a better job at conveying what you're talking about.
It makes me think of slowly walking down a village lane bordered by trees on one side, a field and a fence on the other, the air and sky chill, damp and gray, no one else out. When the dark church comes into view, it appears as if it belongs there as much as anything ever could. Powerful as the sight is, this Californian is intimidated by the darkness of its years. Less powerful, but more comforting, are white Bavarian rococo churches with their dazzling uplifting interiors.
