This is a fascinating framing of the great social question -- roughly put, "is civilization worth it?" Especially noting that tribes create positive relationships within tribes but negative relationships between tribes. The constant seems to be that some people think "how can I (we) take from others so I (we) can make life better for myself (ourselves)?" I associate this greed with "alpha males." It seems we are not alone in the animal kingdom in having alpha males. Does this mean natural selection favors greed? That greed is embedded in human nature? Ideally, civilization would discourage greed so that all can benefit from surplus. But is that ironically out of our reach?
