This is an excellent thought. I'm abusing your analogy, but I think some see the finished arch and feel it's a mystery or a miracle because they cannot even conceive of a support that they literally cannot see. It's a trait seen in the human mind. It's sort of reverse object permanence -- if I don't see it in the space I'm looking at, then it never existed.
