It seems tempting to historians to parallels and cycles, which there definitely are.
It also seems that various cycles cancel each other out, and the state of human society is effectively constant, that there is always bad and good happening all the time.
I recall reading that the early years of the first century AD was thought to be end times by people at the time.
Kennedy, Diamond, Franchopan, Zakaria and others all find interesting instructive possible constants, cycles and parallels.
