We demand it of ourselves -- as a matter of self-discipline -- because to speak of that which we cannot speak about with real meaning is ultimately to create nonsense, to bring confusion and misunderstanding into the world, to waste people's energy. As David Byrne says unsparingly in the song "Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads: "you're talking a lot, but you're not saying anything."
