Walt, thank you for this compelling piece. It's both intellectual and heartfelt. You delineate the human predicament with a good mix of being open-ended and limited. Like you, I see humility as key. Science has done a compelling job of explaining human nature. It’s no surprise, given evolutionary theory, we have a searching mind that struggles to answer every question we ask. What makes us think we can answer all questions? I wonder if there really is an Eternal or Infinite. As Cioran says, aren’t those just words? Do we call out into a gorge, hear our echo, and think it comes from someplace other than us? Whatever interaction or effect we have relative to Nature, it seems pretty hit-or-miss. Is it possible to be content with that? Or need we keep fighting it?
