What a thought-provoking piece! The quote above from Baudrillard floored me. There were two important themes whose association was uncertain for me: (1) reality on the internet and (2) mindful uncertainty (gonna look into Dewey more!). Fakery versus reality seems like a problem with civilization generally, not unique to the internet. And mindfulness is good in all cases, not just the internet. Maybe the association between the two is the internet is the current challenge, that humanity needs more time to digest the internet? Through Western history, we have arguably exchanged one fake world for another—religion, industrialization, etc. Jan 6 arguably was a simulation claiming reality—the completion of Baudrillard’s process that you describe. Leaving aside reality and fakery, our world is constructed, with constant Dewey forks in the road of multiple competing constructions that we have to hold or reconcile. That last sentence sounds true, but those before it were some of the questions coming to mind reading your piece. Look forward to the coming installments!
