When people can't "get" jazz improvisation, I tell them jazz improvisation is a dialogue with the past, That's what I hear in jazz anyway -- John Coltrane in public dialogue with Charlie Parker, for instance. And so is philosophy, like Heidegger's dialogue with Parmenides, or more broadly, almost every modern philosopher's dialogue with Descartes. So I was glad for the theme of this piece. (Although George Gershwin a predecessor of jazz?)
